Report from the Creative Writing Group:
The Big Green Poetry Machine Competition is one of several organised by Young Writers (http://www.youngwriters.co.uk/). Entrants were to write a poem based on environmental issues. They were encouraged to raise awareness of problems, such as pollution, litter and engergy waste, and/or their solutions, like recycling and saving energy. The prizes include: sponsoring a teacher in Kenya, sponsoring an acre of rainforest, adopting an endangered animal and sponsoring a child in the Developing World. Young Writers will publish a selection of entries in an anthology, 'A World of Difference,' in February next year. Six of our pupils have been chosen for publication in the Scottish edition (the school will be sent a complimentary copy).
As well as this, the pupils have been working towards entering other competitions including the Pushkin Prizes (the prize for which is a residential workshop run by a children's author), 'Mini Sagas,' also from Young Writers, and a Divine Chocolate poetry competition.
