Kindrogan AH Field Trip
Advanced Higher Biology Trip to Kindrogan
It’s that time of year again when Advanced Higher investigations are in full swing! In the King’s Park Biology department however, all the practical work at least, is done and dusted. In November, 5 Advanced Higher Biology pupils went to Kindrogan Field Centre in Perthshire to complete important work toward their Advanced Higher Biology investigations.
Kindrogan is Scotland’s National Centre for Excellence in Field Studies and Biodiversity Training; it is situated on the banks of the River Ardle, near Blairgowrie, and is surrounded by stunning Highland scenery.
The four-day trip was very intensive and pupils learned a great deal including how to carry out field research, how to collate and analyse data, and (most difficult of all for some) they learned how to survive for four days without mobile phone coverage!
Miss Barclay, the Biology teacher who accompanied them, was very impressed by the pupils’ hard work and commitment saying they ‘worked extremely hard until 9 or 10 o’clock each night.’ Some pupils even tried to get into the library at 10 o’clock on the Saturday night; only to find out it was closed! Pupils learned a great deal about research methods as well as how to statistically analyse their data. They will now have to apply all that they learned as they write up their Advanced Higher Biology investigations, worth 20% of their final marks.
