 Welcome to King's Park Secondary

Welcome to our website. We hope you find it useful.

In King's Park Secondary, we are committed to building on the good work which takes place in our partner primary schools.  In fact we work with many partners - pupils, parents, staff in King's Park Secondary, staff in other schools in King's Park Learning Community, partner agencies and other services.

Our purpose is to make sure that our pupils are:

  • confident individuals - with high self-esteem and ambition
  • responsible citizens - caring for other people in the school, local, national and global communities
  • effective contributors to society - with initiative and imagination.

Above all, we have high standards and high expectations.  Our SCHOOL VALUES are:

HIGH STANDARDS AND HIGH EXPECTATIONS

King’s Park Secondary School is a six-year non-denominational school on the south side of Glasgow serving Cathcart, King’s Park, Mount Florida and Simshill.

For many years the school has had a well deserved reputation as a very good educational establishment which has provided a high standard of education for all its pupils and has high expectations of its pupils.

THE STAFF

The current staff comprises 61 fte teachers (including 1 probationer teachers), 6 instrumental teachers, 6 Clerical Assistants, 3 Technicians, 1 Librarian, 1 Education Liaison Officer and 2 Janitorial Staff.  The Area Business Support Manager (ABSM) and the Admin and Finance Assistant (AFA) also support the school.

The Senior Management Team consists of the Head Teacher, 4 Depute Head Teachers and the Business Support Manager. There are 9 Principal Teachers (Curriculum), 4 acting Principal Teachers (Curriculum), one Principal Teacher (Support for Learning) and 4 Principal Teachers (Pastoral Care).

The Parent Council is very active and supportive of the school.

THE PUPILS

Our school is popular with parents and pupils and at present has a roll of just under 900. We work closely with our 4 partner primary schools in Croftfoot, King’s Park, Mount Florida and Toryglen. Following rezoning in 2005, pupils living in our former catchment areas of the now closed Holmlea and Simshill Primary Schools who currently attend Merrylee Primary School, retain the right to transfer to King’s Park Secondary without a placing request until 2012. About 15% of the pupils come from ethnic minority backgrounds and where necessary receive support in English as a second language. Many pupils from outwith the catchment area come to the school as a result of placing requests.

ACCOMMODATION

The school, first opened in 1962, is designed around 3 buildings. It has undergone a major refurbishment and installation of extensive ICT facilities. The main teaching block contains English, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Social Studies and Religious Education, Computing, Art and Design, Business Education and Pupil Support. A second block houses Home Economics, Sciences, Technical Education and Music. The third block contains Physical Education, Assembly and Dining Halls, and the administration and management accommodation. Playing field provision is limited and extensive use is made of recreational facilities out with the school.

COURSES AND OPPORTUNITIES

The school is committed to a balanced curriculum, and a wide range of courses lead to National Qualifications at all levels (Standard Grade, Access, Intermediate, Higher, Advanced Higher). The school also promotes the personal and social development of pupils through a PSE programme including careers education and work experience. Additional Support for Learning is provided for pupils who require it, and we aim to ‘stretch’ all pupils of all abilities.

The school benefits from an enthusiastic and talented string orchestra, ceilidh band, jazz band, string and woodwind ensembles and choirs. Other extra curricular activities include football, netball, volleyball, skiing, badminton, eco committee, writing groups, reading groups, aerobics, chess, geology, drama, theatre, and residential trips within Scotland and to Europe. We are always looking for opportunities which extend pupils’ horizons, make learning enjoyable and raise attainment and achievement.
