Senior School pupils voice their opinion – November 2011

Three senior pupils this week competed for the school in prestigious competitions. The first of these competitors was Claire Hunter of 5A1 who entered the Glasgow Speakers Club Public Speaking competition. This competition, in its 55th year, took place at St. Aloysius College in Glasgow and included some of the most talented young orators in Scotland. Claire took to the lectern and argued that the UK’s youth were being persecuted. The theme related to this year’s London riots, failings in the justice system in the UK and youth unemployment.

Later in the week, Ilyaas Rehman of 5A2 and Campbell Mills of 5A1 competed in the Law Society of Scotland competition at Mearns Castle High School. They took on a very strong team on the topic of privacy being more important than freedom of the press. The competition was judged by senior members of the legal profession in a competition which is a breeding ground for budding members of the legal profession.

Though the pupils did not manage to reach the next rounds of the competition, they all really enjoyed the challenge and experience.
